Benefits of Prepaid Meters for Landlords and Tenants

Sep 11, 2023

If there is one vital piece of advice that you need when looking for an apartment to rent, it is that you should ensure the place has a prepaid meter. Trust me, it will save you a lot of stress. Here’s a quick story about a friend of mine who is currently battling with this issue.

After months of looking for an apartment, he finally got one with good network coverage, a nice environment and relatively good roads. He noticed that there was no prepaid meter and he asked his new landlord about it. His landlord who also lives in the compound assured him that all the tenants shared the monthly bill equally.

A couple of months later, my friend realized that he was being asked to pay N5000 nearly every two weeks even though he only spends about 3 days a week at home. He objected to it and reminded his landlord about the need for a prepaid meter so that everyone would pay only for what they used. You can already guess that his response was not encouraging.

Needless to say, my friend will be looking for a new apartment very soon.

With prepaid meters, you can avoid disputes with your landlord, bill estimation, and unexpected bills. In this blog post, we'll explore some benefits of prepaid meters for both landlords and tenants.

1. Transparency and fairness

This is the main benefit for both tenants and landlords. Tenants only need to pay for the exact amount of electricity they use with prepaid meters and it ensures that nobody feels cheated since there will be no room for inflated bills or discrepancies in electricity consumption.

2. Energy conservation

When tenants are aware of their rate of energy usage, they are more likely to adopt energy-efficient practices which will then help to reduce overall electricity consumption thereby benefiting the environment.

3. Cost management

Prepaid meters provide greater control over electricity expenses. You can determine the amount of money you want to spend for the month and stick to it. No unexpected and overpriced bills will come your way at the end of the month.
