How to get a Key Change Token for your Prepaid Meter

Feb 10, 2023

Have you ever had an issue with loading your recharge token? It can be frustrating when your meter rejects your token and you’re 100% sure that you’re putting it in correctly on the meter it’s meant for. Trust me, I know. Anyway, I’m here with a solution. If there has been a change in your tariff plan, you need a key change token to help set things right.

In this blog post, I’ll take you through what a key change token is and how you can get one when your meter doesn’t accept your token. Let’s get into it.

What is a Key Change Token?

A key change token is simply a set of two 20-digit numbers that you can enter when your prepaid meter continuously rejects your token due to a change in your tariff plan.

It is quite similar to the normal electricity recharge token that you’re familiar with, however, they function differently. While the electricity recharge token loads your meter with the amount you purchased, the key change token helps to set your meter’s configuration to fit into a tariff change, key revision number, or supply group.

After the key change tokens have been put in successfully, your meter will then accept electricity recharge tokens.

How can you get a Key Change Token?

Typically, to get a key change token, all you need to do is visit the nearest office of your DisCo and make a request. However, if you’re under Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) or Ikeja Electric (IE), you can get your key change token online without having to visit their offices.

How to generate a Key Change Token from KEDCO

  1. Open a web browser and visit http://customercare.kedco.ng to load KEDCO’s customer care portal.
  2. Select your complaint category - ‘Key change token’
  3. Put in your name, meter number, e-mail address, phone number, and service address.
  4. Click ‘Send Issue’ to submit your request.
  5. After a while, check your email inbox for the two 20-Digits key change tokens. It should be sent as ‘Key change 1’ and ‘Key change 2’
  6. Put in the key change tokens in the right order. Input key change 1 first then press ‘enter’. After it shows ‘Success’, input key change 2 and press ‘enter’.

How to generate a Key Change Token from IE

  1. Visit https://ie-payments.com/apps/tariff-migration-token/
  2. Enter your meter number in the request box.
  3. Click on ‘Submit’
  4. Two 20-digit Key Change Tokens will be generated just for your meter.
  5. Input the key change tokens on your meter and you should be good to go.

Easy peasy.
