National Grid Suffers Second Outage Within Five Days
Nigeria's electricity grid collapsed Tuesday morning around 11 am, leaving homes and businesses without power, being the second outage in just five days.
Data from the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), the Transmission Company of Nigeria arm responsible for power stability, showed total power generation from two generating companies stood at only 219 megawatts at the time of the incident.
However, NISO's Head of Communications, Kazah Akau, downplayed the severity, calling it "a little disturbance" rather than a full collapse. He promised a statement would be released soon.
Distribution load profiles from all 11 electricity distribution companies (DisCos) showed a total of 220MW. Benin and Ibadan DisCos received the highest allocations at 65MW and 50MW respectively, followed by Ikeja and Kaduna DisCos at 40MW each. Abuja DisCo had the lowest allocation with 25MW.
The frequent grid failures continue to plague Nigeria's power sector, disrupting electricity supply across the country.
