Everything to know about debt on your prepaid meter in Nigeria

As a tenant or homeowner in Nigeria, you most likely have a prepaid meter that you recharge so that you can power your home. Whether you're moving into a new building or an old one, there is a slight chance that the assigned electricity meter may have a debt on it.

How is your debt offset on your prepaid meter?

Your prepaid meter debt can be offset or repaid in one of two ways:

Partial payment:

If a partial repayment of your debt was made, it means that a percentage of your last transaction was used to offset your debt while the rest went into payment for your electricity token.
This means that if you pay N5000, for example, and your DisCo takes 20% (N1000) to offset your debt, then you will only receive electricity units worth N4000 instead of N5000.

Please note that the percentage that is deducted is dependent on your DisCo.

Full payment:

In this case, the full amount that you paid will be used to service the debt and you will receive no electricity token for this transaction.

After this payment, there will no longer be any debt on your meter and you will receive the full value of your subsequent transactions.
