Cybersecurity 101: How to Know When a Site is Secure

How to Sep 01, 2020

Everybody loves their ‘bread’. I’m sure you do too. It doesn’t look good when people fall victim to online frauds or scam websites. So, we want to help out by giving you a couple of tips to keep you safe while you do your thing online.

The COVID pandemic has increased the need for a lot of online payments/transactions. With the advent of so many hackers and scammers out there, it’s quite hard to trust a website with your financial details. Especially when you plan on using your card to make payments for a transaction online.

The first question you’d ask is “How do I know if a site is genuine?”

There are many factors that show if a site is secure or not. And like always, BuyPower.ng is not just here to provide convenience, but also to help you in any way we can.

So, we’ll be showing you a few ways to determine if a site is secure or not. As a bonus, we’ll also show you how we keep your information secure on BuyPower. You should try to read this to the end.

How to Check if a Website is a Scam

The most popular way fraudulent websites work is by phishing. Phishing is a method of making unaware site users disclose sensitive information like passwords or banking details.

To avoid this, be on the lookout for the following;

1. The URL
The URL is the link on the address bar. A url is either going to start with http or https. Http means hypertext transfer protocol. The S in https stands for layered security.
Http is perfect for sites you just want to read from. But for commercial purposes please, stick to sites with https. These sites are secure and can be trusted.

2. A padlock icon

A secure site will have a green padlock sign. At the beginning you’ll see a “secure” beside the padlock itself. Sometimes a big red “unsecured” or “Dangerous” will be shown at the left side of the bar. This means you should probably run away.

Never put in sensitive information on sites like this. Try to occasionally glance there when you’re visiting a new site or page. It’ll be very helpful.

3. The elements
Take an extra minute on a website. What do you see? Are there so many unrelated pop ups, ads, redirect pages and grammatical errors? Then you should reconsider giving out sensitive details. These are signs of malware and phishing kits.

4. Privacy Policy
Every website has a privacy policy. If you have extra time to spare, go through this policy and learn how your information and privacy is handled on a particular site. It’ll help avoid a lawsuit.

Those are a couple of details to look out for. Now, let me show you how we keep your details safe on BuyPower.

How BuyPower Keeps your Details Secure

We are sure that the  biggest fear our new customers get on our site is “Are my card details secure on BuyPower?”

Short answer: YES, definitely!

Long answer: At BuyPower.ng, we take our customers details and privacy seriously. This is because it not only affects our esteemed users, but our brand as well. This is why our entire site is secured by Paystack.

Paystack uses an encryption to scramble all your information before it gets to any server. This means no one except you, has access to your card details. Not even BuyPower. Plus Paystack uses a https secure connection. So even the scrambled information cannot be intercepted by any party.

So, what’s the verdict? You’ll never have a cause to worry using BuyPower.ng, trust me.

We hope you can now distinguish between a secure webpage and an insecure one. You can enjoy online transactions knowing that your details are secure.
