The move comes under the Nigeria Power for Health Initiative (NPHI), an effort designed to provide cleaner, more reliable energy to public health facilities through an Energy-as-a-Service (EaaS) model.

It’s a major step.

But beyond the headlines, this raises an important question:

If hospitals, some of the country’s most critical institutions, are struggling with power reliability, what does that mean for everyday Nigerians?

Let’s break it down.

What the Government Announced

The Federal Government, through the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, is seeking private investment to improve electricity access in hospitals across Nigeria.

The goal is simple:

To ensure hospitals have a stable, uninterrupted power supply for critical operations.

This initiative follows concerns over rising electricity costs, inconsistent supply, and the growing pressure on public healthcare facilities.

Under the new model, private investors will help finance and manage energy infrastructure for hospitals, reducing dependence on unreliable grid power.

This could include:

Solar-powered systems

Backup power solutions

Hybrid energy systems

Improved electricity management systems

The long-term aim is to make hospitals more energy-efficient, reduce costs, and improve healthcare delivery.

It’s a strong reminder that power reliability is now a national priority.

Why Hospitals Need Stable Electricity

In hospitals, electricity is directly tied to life-saving services.

Without stable power:

Surgeries can be interrupted

Operating rooms rely heavily on uninterrupted electricity for lighting and medical equipment.

Vaccine storage can be compromised

Vaccines and medications often require cold-chain storage. A power outage can destroy valuable medical supplies.

Oxygen systems can fail

Critical care units depend on electricity-powered oxygen concentrators and ventilators.

Laboratory services can be disrupted

Testing equipment needs consistent power to function properly.

The Bigger Electricity Problem in Nigeria

The hospital power crisis is part of a larger electricity challenge affecting millions of Nigerians.

Homes and businesses face similar problems every day:

Unpredictable outages

Voltage fluctuations

Rising electricity tariffs

Fast-draining prepaid units

Damage to appliances from surges

For small businesses, unstable power often means:

Lost sales

Higher generator costs

Reduced productivity

For households, it means:

Food spoilage

Disrupted work-from-home routines

Poor entertainment access

Increased expenses

The truth is, electricity reliability affects everyone.

What Nigerians Can Learn From This

If major institutions like hospitals are investing in smarter energy solutions, everyday consumers should also start planning smarter.

Here are practical lessons:

1. Don’t Wait Until You Run Out of Units

Many people only buy electricity when their meter balance is critically low. This can leave you stranded during emergencies. Buying ahead helps you stay prepared.

2. Track Your Electricity Spending

Understanding your electricity usage helps you manage costs better.

Pay attention to:

How often you recharge

How fast units finish

Which appliances consume the most power

This helps you budget smarter.

3. Protect Your Appliances

Power surges and unstable voltage can damage electronics. This is especially common during outages and restoration. Surge protection, like the BuyPower smart surge extension, is essential.

How BuyPower Helps You Stay Prepared

At BuyPower, we know electricity isn’t something you can afford to leave to chance. That’s why we make it easier for you to stay powered.

Instant Electricity Token Purchase

Buy tokens anytime, anywhere, anytime, no stress. Whether it’s midnight or early morning, you can recharge your meter in seconds.

Airtime and Data Top-Ups

Power outages often affect internet access. Need data to stay connected? BuyPower lets you top up instantly.

DStv and GOtv Subscriptions

Keep your entertainment running without interruption. Renew your subscriptions quickly on the app.

BuyPower Smart Surge

Protect your appliances from voltage spikes and sudden power restoration. The programme targets 3.4 million meters in two phases. Of the first 1.43 million meters, nearly one million have been delivered, with approximately 150,000 already installed nationwide.

The minister announced a customer complaint desk to report extortion attempts, with confirmed offenders facing public prosecution in collaboration with the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

Bureau of Public Enterprises Director-General Ayo Gbeleyi noted the meters are customized for specific DisCos with anti-theft features and monitored through digital dashboards for transparency.

Mojec Chairman Mrs Mojisola Abdul confirmed nearly 150,000 meters had been installed free of charge and urged consumers not to pay installers.

With over five million customers still on estimated billing, the programme aims to address trust and liquidity challenges in the power sector.

Source(s):

https://www.tvcnews.tv/fg-bans-discos-from-charging-consumers-for-meter-installation/

https://punchng.com/fg-bans-meter-installation-charges-threatens-sanctions/

P.S.: To share your thoughts with us, sign up for a free Disqus account. Your HR team is scrambling to find the perfect employee appreciation gift, end-of-year bonus, or holiday thank-you that will actually make an impact. You've tried gift baskets, branded merchandise, generic gift cards, and cash bonuses. Some landed well, others fell flat.

But here's a question: What if you could give your employees something they actually need, use immediately, and remember every single day?

Welcome to the future of corporate gifting: electricity tokens.

Before you dismiss this as "too practical" or "not exciting enough," consider this: In a country where reliable power supply remains a daily challenge, gifting electricity tokens is like giving your employees peace of mind, uninterrupted productivity, and genuine financial relief all wrapped into one.

Let's explore why forward-thinking Nigerian companies are making electricity tokens their go-to employee bonus, and how your organisation can implement this game-changing approach to corporate gifting.

The Problem with Traditional Corporate Gifts

1: Money Spent, Impact Lost: Let's be honest about traditional corporate gifting in Nigeria:

2: Gift Baskets: Beautiful presentation, forgotten within days. Half the items go unused, and the basket ends up in storage.

3: Branded Merchandise: Employees smile politely at the branded mug, notebook, or T-shirt, then rarely use them. Your brand visibility? Minimal.

4: Generic Gift Cards: Limited merchant options, expiry dates, and the hassle of physically going somewhere to redeem them reduce their appeal.

5: Cash Bonuses: While always appreciated, cash disappears into general expenses without creating a memorable association with your company's generosity.

6: Holiday Hampers: Expensive to procure and distribute, with varied reception depending on individual preferences and dietary needs.

The challenge isn't the gesture; employees appreciate being remembered. The challenge is creating a meaningful impact that aligns with real needs.

Why Electricity Tokens Are the Smart Choice

1. Universal Need, Immediate Impact

Every single employee uses electricity. Regardless of income level, family size, or lifestyle, power supply is a non-negotiable household expense. When you gift electricity tokens, you're addressing a fundamental need that affects every employee equally.

The immediate impact factor:

Tokens are used within hours of receiving them

Employees feel the relief instantly

The benefit is tangible and measurable

Unlike cash, it doesn't disappear into vague expenses

2. Financial Relief That's Felt

Nigerian households spend an average of ₦15,000-₦40,000 monthly on electricity, depending on consumption and location. For many employees, this represents 5-15% of their monthly income.

When you gift ₦10,000 in electricity tokens:

It covers 25-65% of their monthly electricity budget

It frees up cash for other year-end expenses

It removes stress during expensive holiday seasons

It provides breathing room during financially tight periods

This isn't just a gift, it's financial wellness support disguised as appreciation.

3. Zero Wastage, 100% Utilisation

Unlike physical gifts that might not suit everyone's taste or needs, electricity tokens have a 100% utilisation rate. There are no:

Unwanted items gathering dust

Wrong sizes or preferences

Dietary restrictions or allergies

Cultural or religious considerations

Returns or exchanges needed

Every naira you spend on electricity tokens delivers full value to the recipient.

4. Easy Distribution at Scale

Traditional gifting logistics can be a nightmare:

Physical items require storage, wrapping, and distribution

Gift cards need a physical handover or mailing

Cash bonuses involve payroll processing and tax considerations

Hampers require vendor coordination and delivery scheduling

Electricity tokens through BuyPower?

Digital distribution via email and phone number

Instant delivery to hundreds of employees simultaneously

No storage or logistics costs

No geographical limitations

Perfect Occasions for Electricity Token Gifting

Year-End Bonuses (December)

December is the most expensive month for Nigerian families: children's school fees, holiday expenses, travel, and entertainment all peak simultaneously. Electricity costs also spike due to increased home usage and the harmattan season.

Why it works: Your gift directly offsets a major December expense, providing real financial relief when it's needed most.

Recommended amount: ₦10,000-₦20,000 per employee, depending on your budget.

Implementation: How to Gift Electricity Tokens to Your Team

Step 1: Determine Your Budget

Calculate total budget based on:

Number of employees

Amount per employee (₦5,000-₦20,000 is typical)

Example: 100 employees × ₦10,000 = ₦1,000,000 total budget

Step 2: Collect Employee Information

Gather required details through your HR system:

Full name

Email address and/or phone number

Meter number (if sending directly to meters)

Preferred distribution company (DISCO)

Privacy note: Ensure data collection complies with your privacy policies and get employee consent where required.

Step 3: Coordinate with BuyPower

Contact BuyPower's corporate services team:

Email: payable-sales@buypower.ng

Provide: Employee list, chosen distribution method, preferred dates

Set up: Bulk purchase discount options for large organisations

Addressing Common HR Concerns

"Won't employees think it's impersonal?"

Actually, the opposite is true. Employees appreciate that you understand their real challenges. The personalisation comes from the relevance, not the wrapping paper. Pair it with a thoughtful message about why you chose this gift, and it becomes deeply personal.

"What about employees who don't pay their own electricity bills?"

Even employees living in company housing or with family have friends, relatives, or other members they support. The flexibility of electricity tokens means the gift always finds value.

"Is this really memorable enough for special occasions?"

Ask yourself: Would your employee rather receive another branded mug or have their December electricity bill covered? You're recharging your meter more frequently, wondering if something's wrong with your prepaid meter or if your neighbours are somehow tapping into your line.

Relax. Your meter is probably fine—welcome to harmattan season, when your electricity consumption patterns change dramatically, often catching households off guard.

In this comprehensive guide, we'll explain exactly why your power consumption spikes during the dry season and, more importantly, how to budget smartly for the November-February period so you're never caught without power.

Understanding Harmattan and Its Impact on Your Power Bills

Harmattan is the dry, dusty trade wind that blows from the Sahara Desert across West Africa, typically from late November through mid-March. While it brings cooler temperatures and hazy skies, it also significantly changes your household's electricity consumption.

The Harmattan Season Timeline:

Early Harmattan (November-December): Gradual temperature drops, increased dust

Peak Harmattan (December-January): Coldest temperatures, heaviest dust, lowest humidity

Late Harmattan (February-March): Temperatures begin rising, dust decreases

Each phase affects your electricity usage differently, and understanding these patterns helps you plan better.

Why Your Electricity Consumption Increases During Harmattan

1. Heating Appliances Come Out of Storage

During harmattan, Nigerian households experience a phenomenon many don't consciously track: the sudden activation of heating appliances that have sat idle since March.

Common heating appliances and their power consumption:

Electric kettles: 1,500-2,000 watts (used multiple times daily for hot beverages)

Water heaters: 1,500-3,000 watts (daily hot showers become necessary)

Pressing irons: 1,000-1,800 watts (more ironing due to heavier clothing)

Electric heaters/radiators: 1,000-2,500 watts (especially in northern regions)

Real-world impact: A family that uses an electric kettle three times daily and a water heater for 30-minute showers can add an extra 5-8 kWh to their daily consumption

2. Longer Operating Hours for Appliances

The harmattan sun sets earlier (around 6:00 PM compared to 7:00 PM during the rainy season), meaning:

Lighting: Your lights come on at least an hour earlier each day. With an average household using 5-8 bulbs, that's an additional 30-40 hours of lighting monthly.

Refrigeration: Your refrigerator and freezer work harder in the dry air. Low humidity makes these appliances run longer cycles to maintain temperature, increasing consumption by 15-25%.

Entertainment Systems: With cooler, more comfortable evenings, families spend more time indoors watching TV, using game consoles, and charging devices.

3. Dust and Maintenance Issues

Harmattan dust affects your appliances' efficiency:

Air conditioners and fans: Dust clogs air filters, making units work 20-30% harder to achieve the same cooling effect. This translates directly to higher electricity consumption.

Refrigerator coils: Dust accumulation on condenser coils reduces heat dissipation efficiency, forcing the compressor to run longer.

Blocked vents: Dust in laptop and desktop computer vents causes overheating, making cooling fans run continuously.

4. Water Heating Becomes Non-Negotiable

Let's be honest - cold showers during harmattan aren't happening for most Nigerians! The morning chill makes hot water a necessity rather than a luxury.

The mathematics:

A 15-minute hot shower using a 2,000-watt water heater consumes 0.5 kWh

For a family of four taking daily hot showers: 2 kWh/day = 60 kWh/month

At ₦80/kWh average: That's ₦4,800 monthly just for hot showers!

5. Festive Season Overlap

Harmattan coincides with the festive season (Christmas, New Year, and various celebrations), which means:

More cooking with electric appliances

Extended use of entertainment systems

Decorative lighting

Hosting guests (increased overall household consumption)

Home-based celebrations due to cool weather

How to Budget for November-February: A Practical Guide

Step 1: Calculate Your Baseline Consumption

Look at your electricity purchases from August to October (non-harmattan months) to establish your baseline:

Example calculation:

August: ₦12,000

September: ₦14,000

October: ₦13,000

Baseline average: ₦13,000

Step 2: Apply Seasonal Multipliers

Use our seasonal increase estimates to project needs:

Your Harmattan Budget Projection:

November: ₦13,000 × 1.20 = ₦15,600

December: ₦13,000 × 1.35 = ₦17,550

January: ₦13,000 × 1.30 = ₦16,900

February: ₦13,000 × 1.20 = ₦15,600

Total 4-month budget: ₦65,650

Compare this to your normal 4-month spend of ₦52,000 - that's an additional ₦13,650 for the harmattan season!

Step 3: Create a Harmattan Electricity Fund

Strategy A - Monthly Allocation: Adjust your monthly budget immediately.

Calculate the difference between harmattan and baseline months

November needs ₦2,600 extra, December needs ₦4,550 extra, etc.

Reduce discretionary spending in these categories to accommodate

Strategy B - Bulk Purchase: If cash flow allows, buy larger amounts early.

Purchase ₦20,000-₦30,000 in early November

Reduce transaction fees from multiple small purchases

Psychological benefit of not watching units deplete daily

Step 4: Implement Energy-Saving Strategies

While you can't avoid increased consumption entirely, you can minimise the spike:

High-Impact Actions:

Clean appliances before harmattan: Remove dust from AC filters, refrigerator coils, and fan blades

Use the kettle efficiently: Boil only the water you need (each unnecessary kettle boil costs ₦15-₦20)

Optimise water heater timing: Heat water during off-peak hours if your tariff supports it

Switch to LED bulbs: With longer lighting hours, LEDs save 75% compared to incandescent bulbs

Strategic appliance use: Run high-consumption appliances like washing machines and irons during daylight when possible

Special Considerations by Region

Northern Nigeria (Kano, Kaduna, Maiduguri, Jos)

Experiences the coldest harmattan temperatures

Heating appliance use is highest

Budget for 35-50% increases

Consider blankets and warm clothing to reduce heater dependence

Central Nigeria (Abuja, Nasarawa, Niger State)

Moderate harmattan impact

Focus on morning water heating costs

Budget for 25-35% increases

Dust management is critical for appliance efficiency

Southern Nigeria (Lagos, Port Harcourt, Calabar)

Mildest harmattan impact

Still experiences increased consumption from longer lighting hours

Budget for 15-25% increases

Humidity changes affect refrigeration more than heating

Smart Tools and Apps for Harmattan Planning

BuyPower App Features to Use:

Transaction History: Review your previous year's November-February spending

Bulk Purchase: Buy larger amounts to reduce per-unit transaction costs

When to Be Extra Cautious

Week before Christmas: Consumption spikes dramatically with cooking, decorating, and hosting. Pre-load your meter with extra units.

New Year's Day countdown: Many households run out of power just as celebrations peak. Top up on December 30th to avoid the rush.

First week of January: "January blues" hit finances hard. If possible, buy electricity in late December for early January needs.

Final Thoughts: Planning Is Power

Harmattan season electricity increases are inevitable, but they don't have to derail your budget. With proper planning, realistic expectations, and smart energy habits, you can navigate November through February without financial stress or unexpected blackouts.

Your Action Plan This Week:

Calculate your baseline consumption from August to October

Project your November-February needs using our multipliers

Start your harmattan electricity fund immediately

Clean and service all appliances before peak season

Enable BuyPower reminder as a safety net

Have you noticed any changes in consumption during the harmattan season? Share your experiences and tips in the comments below!
